Things To Consider
Before buying, there are several things you should keep in mind. Let’s go through them below.
Firstly, you should check the weight limit of the board. You can do this either by looking at the product description or asking a question in the comment section.
For heavy riders, longboards that can support over 275 lbs are very good. You would not want to choose boards that support less than 200 lbs or up to 220 lbs. Those are not strong enough.
White Wave Bamboo longboard is a great board that can hold riders up to 300 lbs. Atom drop-through board or Magneto bamboo longboard are also good choices that can support riders around 275 lbs.
A deck width of 6 or 7 inches may not be ideal for heavy riders. Although some people think shoe size is not relevant to deck size, we think it does provide a very good estimation.
For riders whose shoe size is from 7 and above, we advise them to stick to the deck width around 8 or higher.
You should keep in mind, however, is that an 8-inch deck does not mean all of the board body is 8 inches long.
The measurement points to the widest part of the board, which is usually the middle part where you place your feet.
The wider the deck, the more support you’ll get when you ride. Especially when you race downhill, you’ll get better stability.
Most longboards for heavy riders you find today are 9 to 10 inches wide. These are very good specs that you should stick to.
There are 3 types of materials that are worth your attention: hardwood maple, bamboo, and fiberglass. A plastic skateboard is out of the question.
When choosing a wooden deck, you should also look at its make-up. Specifically, see how many layers of wood there are on the deck.
Some boards have around 3 or 6 layers. These are not enough for your need. You’d want to check boards that are made from 8, 9, or 11 layers of wood. These are strong and durable.
If you want some extra support, you can check the option of bamboo and fiberglass combo.
For example, the Magneto bamboo longboard is reinforced with fiberglass for easy cruising, carving, and doing tricks.
If you’re looking for a carving longboard, you can check the deck flex as well. If it has a cambered profile, then it’s a good choice.
Our straightforward recommendation is to get ABEC 11 bearings. This is the top of the market right now.
You need very fast bearings for longboards. Because longboards generally suck when going at turtle slow speeds. And ABEC 11 bearings are super fast and durable.
In this case, your weight does affect the speed to a certain degree. With fast bearings, you’ll be able to balance the equation and make up for some extra weight.
Note, however, that ABEC 11 bearings are expensive. If your budget is slightly tighter, you can opt for ABEC 9 bearings. Those are acceptable and cheaper.
The drop-through (or cut-out) deck is ideal for downhill racing. It will minimize wheel bites.
However, if you love the regular bullet shape board, there are some options for you. Our suggestion is to look for boards whose wheels extrude out from the deck.
That means, when you’re looking at your board from the top down, you’ll be able to see the wheels. Sanview bamboo longboard is a great option in this aspect.
Type of longboard
If you extend your search a bit into the electric board category, you’ll find some nice options for your needs.
Some motorized boards can hold riders over 275 lbs. For example, the WowGo 2S can hold riders up to 280 lbs.
Watch this WowGo 2S 300 lbs weight test right here:
Some other models can carry less heavy riders like Spadger Electric Skateboard D5X (max load 260 lbs) or BLITZART Tornado (max load 250 lbs).
When riding an e-board, you don’t have to worry about the weight slowing the board down. The motor power will make up for that.
Trucks & Wheels
Most longboard trucks are lower than skateboard trucks. You’ll find trucks of a 40-degree angle.
It’s recommended for heavy riders to get trucks of this number. You’ll get better stability when you get up to speed.
Also, the wheel size around 70mm is a good target. The larger the wheels, the faster they’ll roll. Also, bigger wheels will give you slightly better support.
You’ll also want to check the durometer of the wheels. The rating of 78A is a good choice. You’d want soft wheels because they give you more grip on the road.
Other things to look out for
Always wear a helmet when you’re racing downhill. To choose the best one, measure your head circumference at the widest part of your head.
These are very good brands when shopping for longboards:
